Children can learn to read as early as they can speak and reading is a natural process using basic skills. It is no different from a child distinguishing a puppy from a kitten and so there is no reason why a normal child cannot identify the words

The written language is seldom presented to children in such a way that enables them to read. In most children’s books, the printed word is overwhelmed by coloured pictures of objects. Sometimes, there are too many things on a single page for the child to absorb. The result is that the child fails to read.”
